How much does a website cost?

This is the most common question for potential clients to ask, and for the small business owner, is the most reasonable when you are balancing expenses with potential income. This issue is more a matter of defining a marketing strategy, than just budgeting appropriately, or worst case scenario, looking for “the cheapest price.”

You as a client will need to review your overall marketing strategy before you start shopping around for a web designer, a programmer, or an Internet Marketing professional. Finding out the long term plan makes it simpler to assign a realistic budget, and to highlight your own specific needs. Clear up any misconceptions before nailing down a price to make sure you understand your needs and wants, especially if you have little or no Internet experience. If you follow the next simple steps it will give you a departure point to evaluate your budget, any questions fell free to contact us, we will be glad to answer them for you.

Identify your current stage when it comes to Internet Presence

A. Internet Presence. Does not have a website, or web site it’s outdated.

B. Promotion and Data Base creation. Have website, but looking to increase traffic.

C. Transaction Process. Have sufficient traffic to website, but looking to implement Internet transactions.

Stage A

Step 1

Pricing of website. This section is For those that chose A on the previous Step

Use the Rule of 4. I tell my clients to expect four transactions on the first year as a result of having a website, now most clients expect more, but when it comes to budgeting I tell them I can guarantee four. Then, you as the client know what your average transaction is. It may be $50, $100, $300 or $1000. It does not matter, multiply your average transaction by four, and it will give you what you should expect to pay for your basic website. Again, this is just to have a starting number to allow you to budget it properly, if you have higher expectations adjust the number to your desire.

Step 2

Every website as would any vehicle will require maintenance, and updates.  Think how many updates you will like to make to your webpage during the year. If you can’t think of any, then plan on at least one, but no more than 2. That would be the average cost of one of your transactions. ($50, 100, etc.) This can be your budget for website maintenance for the year.

Step 3

Every webpage or website will require traffic in order to be able to generate income for you. Normally I suggest multiplying, your average transaction by 2 to come up with a basic figure for your online promotion, and Basic Data Base Creation for your business. Of course the more traffic the more clients, but focus on the basics before jumping into Internet campaigns, my philosophy is to start with time based promotions first, that means registering with sites that can send you related traffic, free of course, but when evaluating paid basic promotion make sure that they are based on time (month, year) not per click.

Step 4

Armed with this information, you are now ready to compare who will be able to provide you with the best service. Give your prospective designer, programmer, or Internet Marketing Professional the budget you have assigned, and ask them to give you a detailed explanation of what you expect to receive for this amount; you will be surprised as a business owner what you can get for your price.

When it comes to maintenance, ask them to give you an estimate for changes to your webpage, leave it open for them to give you a number, if they ask you how many changes? Tell them you may have only one change during the year may be two. You just want to get an idea how it will be dealing with changes in the future.

When it comes to promotion, ask them if they offer you any way of promoting your site. Do not expect much if all you are looking for is a basic website at a low budget, but again, you may be surprised what they may offer you in order to get your business.

Step 5

Make your selection based on a long term plan. Go back and look at you marketing plan, and select based on what your intuition tells you about the person you will be dealing with. You are starting a business relationship with this designer, programmer, or Marketing Professional, will they be around in a year? Do they have business experience? Do they fit your needs?

Hope these simple steps help you determine what your investment will be for pricing a basic website that can help you establish your Internet Presence. For more information visit us again for other helpful articles.
